This past weekend we rented Turbo to watch with our daughter. I vaguely remember hearing from a few people that it was a solid Dreamworks flick, so I thought we would give it a shot.
Despite it being set in the exciting world of tomato harvesting garden snails it gets off to a slow start. About 20 minutes in my daughter proclaimed, “I don’t like this snail movie”. I pretty much agreed with her.
I think it got better towards the end of the first act, but then it sets up the scenario where a snail is actually going to race against cars in the actual Indianapolis 500. At that point what little interest I had in the film was gone. Turbo is one of the most complete failures I’ve seen from a mainstream animated movie in quite a while. It does have a pretty good sequence at the end of the race, but other than that is was garbage.
To be fair I was only half paying attention for the better part of the film, but from what I saw I didn’t like it, and neither did my 3 year old. However, the following day she asked about the snail movie, and she seems pretty interested to watch the Netflix animated series that comes out at the end of this month. We probably haven’t seen the last of Turbo and the gang, but I’m hoping the Netflix cartoon is better than the movie.
