Sherlock Series 2

A couple days ago I finished Reichenbach Fall, the third and final episode of series 2 of the BBC show Sherlock. I'm still not sure how to feel about it. It seems like I should have a lot to say, but I don't. It was not what I expected.

I was saddened by the Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes movie that came out a few years ago, and its subsequent sequal. Not because they were bad movies, but because this was the first exposure a lot of kids were getting to the character of Sherlock Holmes. I don't care what you say, the guy in those movies is not Sherlock Holmes.

Benedict Cumberbatch in Sherlock most definitely is Sherlock Holmes. Seeing the modern day take on it makes me want to go back and re-read the Arthur Conan Doyle stories. The BBC series captures the feeling of the stories well. I never get tired of the scenes of Sherlock using his powers of deduction. It is awesome every time. The way it is shot makes it even more impressive.

All three episodes this year were excellent, but I thought overall the first series was stronger. The final episode was intense, but Scandal In Belgravia and Hounds of Baskerville were not as strong. I didn't get sucked into either of them like I did in all three episodes from series one. I thought I would like Baskerville, as it was one of my favorite stories from the books. Maybe I just got my expectations up too high.

If you have Netflix the first series is worth checking out. I'm thinking about re-watching it. Hopefully series two is available to stream soon. It is serialized so all the episodes build upon one another in some way. Still, they stand alone enough that you wouldn't be lost if you just jumped in and watched one. I think they are going to do 3 more episodes next year then that will be it. I can't wait to see what they have in store.
