The Killing Season 2 - Three Episodes Left

I have been dvr'ing episodes of The Killing this year and just this past weekend I caught up to everybody else. I have stuck with The Killing even though it got a lot of hate, and I am glad I did. I was just as mad as everybody else with how season 1 ended. I think we all got the sense that we had wasted a ton of time. I was skeptical going into season 2. I thought for sure we would know who the killer was in the first couple episodes, but I had no clue how they were going to keep the show going after that. I was wronge. We are now coming into the home stretch of season 2 and, guess what, we still don't know who the killer is.

Sherlock Series 2

A couple days ago I finished Reichenbach Fall, the third and final episode of series 2 of the BBC show Sherlock. I'm still not sure how to feel about it. It seems like I should have a lot to say, but I don't. It was not what I expected.

I was saddened by the Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes movie that came out a few years ago, and its subsequent sequal. Not because they were bad movies, but because this was the first exposure a lot of kids were getting to the character of Sherlock Holmes. I don't care what you say, the guy in those movies is not Sherlock Holmes.

A slight blog change

Messing with my blog code is one of my favorite things, and I've been doing a lot of it lately. Not writing in my blog or doing anything productive, but making minor changes that are barely even noticeable.

I did make one fairly recognizable change. I used to use some code to auto create post summaries and a thumbnail. On the main page all the posts were equal height and I always thought that uniformity looked nice. I've used it for years. I used it even before blogger had the functionality for page breaks, which was a major driving factor for instituting it in the first place. I've grown tired of it. I'm going to start using the standard jump-link format. It means I have to go back and fix every post I've ever put on on here, but I will work my way through them eventually.

The theater going experience

I love watching movies. At some point in my life I loved watching movies in the theater. As a kid it was such a special event. We had a small theater in the town where my Grandma lived. I remember her taking me when I was small. I didn't get to go very often, which made our trips even more special.

The theater has lost the magic that it once held. I am older now, and it doesn't seem like such a special thing to spend way too much money to sit in a dirty seat with a bunch of popcorn crunching strangers.

Avengers Discussion on the /Filmcast

A really good discussion on The Avengers from one of my favorite movie podcasting crews. The first part is spoiler free and they give you plenty of warning for when they are going to bust them out. If the /Filmcast isn't in your podcast feed reader, you should add it.

Avengers Review on The Deleted Scene

This is a good director-focused review of the film. I agree with everything. The action is very well done. The movie is extremely funny. Tony Stark was great, way better than the dedicated Iron Man films.

I am not all that familiar with Whedon's past work. I obviously know the name, but didn't watch the shows. Clearly the sum of everything else he had done before was a tiny speck compared to what he had the chance to do with The Avengers. He hypothetically could have ruined his career, or at least his chance to ever make a blockbuster again. He didn't. This is what he will be known for, at least for a while.

Thoughts on The Avengers

There have been a ton of reviews written about Joss Whedon's Marvel film that just broke the record for biggest opening weekend. Most of those reviews tend to be really wordy and plot explainy, so I am going to try avoid all that. I'll make it fast.

I've seen both of the Iron Man films. I never saw that Hulk movie, and I have yet to see Thor or Captain America. There are a lot of tie in's, so I probably should have taken the time to view those, but I wanted to see The Avengers opening weekend, so I did. I freaking loved it. It was really good. I'm not a big comic book movie kind of guy, whatever that means. The Avengers was really good... and really funny too.
